Booklist Review

Part of the Tadpoles series for beginning readers, this title tells a story about kitchen fun with a refreshingly all-male cast and well-chosen, entry-level vocabulary. Let's make a cake, proposes Jed's dad. Who for? asks Jed. You'll see, says Dad, and the two begin mixing together a stomach-churning concoction: fat scraps, cheese, bread, and sunflower seeds. Jed finally gets an answer to his question when Dad carries the cake, fresh from the oven, out into the yard, and a flock of happy birds digs in. New readers will appreciate the large type and well-paced, simple sentences, but even preliterate kids will enjoy Cope's brightly colored ink drawings, which reinforce the meaning in the words while extending all the comedy, from the flurry of incongruous ingredients to Jack's fully grossed-out expression. A strong entry in the series.--Engberg, Gillian Copyright 2010 Booklist
