Booklist Review

This first title in the Year in Girl Hell series follows the Awesome Threesome Mia, Lexi, and Alysha as they move from the comfort of elementary school to the unchartered territory of ninth grade. Alysha is obsessed with the grade's popular girls ( the shinys ), and she will do whatever it takes to be one of them; Lexi has troubles at home, but she is also torn between tagging along with Alysha and sleepovers with Mia; and Mia has a new friend, Michi. The drama played out here is standard high-school fare and includes not only friendships and betrayals but also trips to the mall, makeovers, boys, and a talent competition. This paperback import is full of British words and phrases, such as shopping centre and mates, but the themes are universal. While the plot is rushed, particularly towards the end when the talent competition breezes by in a flash, tween and younger teen girls may enjoy the frothy read and relate to the notion of high school (or middle school) as hell.--Kelley, Ann Copyright 2010 Booklist
