Booklist Review

In this satisfying conclusion to Ewing's fantasy duology, revelations abound and all parties endeavor to converge on the mysterious island of Braxos, to which the sapphic City above the Sky is magically anchored. Sera, a Cerulean, and the human siblings Agnes and Leo journey incognito through the island country of Pelago in search of Ambrosine Byrne, a formidable, power-hungry political figure and the siblings' grandmother, rumored to know the only safe pathway to Braxos. The looming war between Pelago and Kaolin complicates their mission. In the floating City, Leela, Sera's friend, is beginning to discover the enormous extent of the High Priestess' lies and manipulations, going back hundreds of years to the Great Sadness, when so many Ceruleans died. This sequel is a stronger novel than The Cerulean (2019), with a swiftly paced plot, believable character development, and a rewarding payoff to the intricate interlocking of multiple story lines. This narrative also has a gentle, well-integrated message about sharing resources to benefit the greater good that is especially timely.
