He was educated at the Arts Cinema and Jesus College at the University of Cambridge, where he read Modern and Medieval Languages and did a doctorate in French. Afterwards he taught English in Paris and French in Cambridge, until becoming a freelance translator (mainly from French and German, but with some Italian). His translations are either of works of literature, or of texts dealing with sociology, history, philosophy, current affairs and politics.
